Introduction to 'Sabar Bonda'

Rohan Kanawade’s highly praised film Sabar Bonda is making its way to India. This Marathi drama explores the forbidden relationship between two men in rural Maharashtra and had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Notably, Sabar Bonda (Cactus Pears) won the prestigious World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic, marking a significant achievement as the first Indian feature to receive this honor.


Cast and Release Details

In his directorial debut, Kanawade features actors Bhushaan Manoj, Suraaj Suman, and Jayshri Jagtap in pivotal roles. The film is set to be released in India by Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media on September 19, just in time for the selection process for India’s Oscar entry.


Kanawade's Journey

During an interview in January, Kanawade shared insights about his challenging upbringing and the obstacles he overcame to create Sabar Bonda. He recounted how his father, who worked as a driver throughout his life, encouraged him to pursue his dream of filmmaking, emphasizing the importance of passion in whatever one chooses to do.
